Strengthen bones meds and esophageal cancer

Those who follow the long-term treatment with drugs to strengthen bones shows an almost double risk of developing esophageal cancer, a study conducted by a team of researchers at Oxford University.

The study involved about 80,000 patients and took place over seven years. Results showed that the number of people who used drugs to strengthen bones (by mouth) and have developed esophageal cancer was 1.93 higher than the number of people who have not used such drugs.

Although the results of this research suggests that drugs against osteoporosis may have an influence on the development of cancer, more studies are needed to determine the exact role and mechanism of such effect. Researcher Jane Green said that those following treatment with drugs against osteoporosis do not have to worry; the risk of developing esophageal cancer is quite low and can be neglected.
